2024 Electoral Redistribution - Victoria and Western Australia

CartDeco has recently completed a large mapping project for the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) showing the proposed redistribution of electoral boundaries in Victoria and Western Australia.

As Australia’s population changes, electoral boundaries need to reflect those changes, with electorates shifting boundaries over time. The AEC ensures independence over boundary changes to counter gerrymandering and bias. Consequently there is a great need for security and over the data and map material prior to public release.

From the early settlement and the establishment of the Westminster system of government in Australia there has been a need for delineating electoral boundaries in a fair and transparent way. Each political division holds roughly the same number of eligible electors. As populations grow, shrink and move, so too do the electoral boundaries.

In May 2024 CartDeco was selected to do the electoral redistribution mapping for Victoria and Western Australia. This involved creating proposal maps for public comment of the 38 proposed electoral divisions in Victoria and the 16 proposed electoral divisions in Western Australia. Additional large format maps were created in each state to show the existing and proposed boundaries. As part of the public comment phase the AEC receives submissions and will recommend final boundaries in each state.

CartDeco, in association with Flat Earth Mapping and Custom Mapping Services, produced all maps for the Victorian and Western Australian redistributions ahead of time and on budget for the AEC. Our proven workflow using Adobe Illustrator and Avenza MAPublisher ensured a consistent, clean and high quality finish on all maps to the standards expected by the AEC.
